Peugeot wins real-world 2015 MPG marathon

Peugeot has clinched the victory title in this year's MPG Marathon with the new 208 diesel hatchback. The car was driven in real-world driving conditions over 385 miles, achieving an average fuel economy of 104.5mpg.

Peugeot's 208 achieved both the highest MPG figure of any car in attendance, and also the Best Percentage Improvement, with a 29 per cent increase over official Combined Cycle economy figures.

Peugeot's victory demonstrates that it is possible to significantly improve on manufacturers' official consumption figures.

The French firm used a 1.6-litre BlueHDi 208 in the Marathon, which holds an official drive cycle figure of 80.7mpg. The brand new car was piloted by former Peugeot Sport UK manager Mick Linford and part-time rally navigator Jemma Champion.

In order to rigorously replicate real-world driving, the rules demand that teams reach pre-set checkpoints by a target time. This year's course forced co-driver's to navigate hills and traffic strategically, whilst ensuring motorway driving was less advantageous thanks to pre-determined checkpoints.

Reflecting on Peugeot's success, Mick Linford said: "We're absolutely over-the-moon. This is the highest mpg I have ever achieved in the event and I'm absolutely delighted to win it."

Peugeot are planning on increasing the 208's fuel efficiency by equipping the 1.6-litre BlueHDi with Stop & Start technology, lengthening the fuel economy to 94.2mpg.

Neil Moscrop, brand director at Peugeot UK, added: "This is a fantastic result which clearly highlights just how efficient the latest Peugeot range of new cars can be in real-world traffic conditions. Customers seeking reassurances that they are buying a new car with leading environmental credentials need look no further than Peugeot for the most fuel efficient vehicles on the market."
