Ten Second Review

Why do you buy an Audi A1 over, say, a Volkswagen Polo or a SEAT Ibiza? It's to suggest you've got the disposable income to spend on something more stylish and exclusive. The latest S Line Style Edition of the A1 furthers that impression with some smart extras. If you're already leaning towards an A1, this version - available in three-door or five-door Sportback form - is probably going to be hard to resist.


It's easy to be cynical when writing about cars. When a friend asked what I thought about a prospective purchase of an Audi A1, I rather sniffily dismissed the car as a "Volkswagen Polo with tinsel on it". She looked slightly crestfallen, thought for a moment and then quietly countered, "Yes, but nice tinsel." I learned a lesson that day which was not to underestimate the power of Audi's brand. Also that there's nothing inherently wrong about spending money on a car that makes you feel good about yourself. The Audi A1 certainly seems to manage that amongst its core constituency. Whether you choose the three-door or the five-door Sportback version it's a beautifully-finished vehicle that manages to pour just enough of those Audi chromosomes into its compact dimensions. Buyers tend to migrate towards the upper trim levels, with S Line proving a popular pick and there's now an A1 edition that adds to the S Line kit. The S Line Style Edition adds a number of extras and it's hard to see it being anything other than a sales winner. Tinsel works.

Driving Experience

There's a choice of three engines and they're all good. Opening proceedings is a 1.2-litre TFSI unit which might be small but punches above its weight. True, the 86bhp power output doesn't sound particularly ballistic, but the A1 is light on its feet, and will get to 62mph in just 11.4 seconds on the way to a top speed of 112mph. Alternatively, you can step up to a 121bhp 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine which manages a 0-62mph sprint of 8.9 seconds and a top speed of 126mph. You can also specify this engine with the lovely S-tronic seven-speed twin-clutch sequential transmission. Prefer diesel? Audi's got you covered there, providing a 104bhp 1.6 TDI which manages the sprint in 10.5 seconds and a top speed of 118mph. There's not a lot that's particularly novel about the A1's underpinnings, the chassis being shared with the latest generation Volkswagen Polo. That means tried and tested strut suspension up front and a compact torsion beam arrangement at the back. Ride quality is firm and there's not the effervescence of a MINI but available cornering grip is augmented by a clever stability control system.

Design and Build

I'm guessing most of you are pretty fluent in the design language of Audi, so there are no big surprises here. The S Line versions of the A1 already feature some exterior features that set them apart from more proletarian variants and the Style Edition goes another step further. You still get the S line grille, side sills and bumpers, but now you also get xenon headlamps with distinctive LED daytime running lights and 17-inch 'five V-spoke' alloy wheels with a bi-colour finish, which replace the standard 17-inch 'five twin-spoke' S line wheels. A bi-colour 'five-arm' design is also offered as a no-cost option. There's also a gloss black finish for the contrasting roof line in three-door versions, and a fully gloss black contrasting roof in Sportback models, both of which also feature gloss black door mirror housings. An additional black styling package also brings a gloss finish for the single frame front grille surround and a matte black finish for the grille, fog light surrounds and number plate holder. The cabin is quiet and maturely finished with no speedometers the size of dinner plates or garish graphics. The sleeves for the propeller-style air vents are finished in either Misano Red or Glacier White when these exterior colours are chosen, or in gloss black in conjunction with the Ice Silver and Phantom Black exterior options. Audi contends that if you're downsizing from a bigger car, you expect big car sophistication and the A1 serves that up in spades. Everything is soft touch, silicon damped and consistent in feel and design. The A1 body can only afford so much interior space in a package 3954mm long, but the 270-litre boot extends to a respectable 920-litres if you drop the back seats. It's a little bigger than most city cars but is aced for space by a lot of superminis. The Sportback makes provision for a third passenger in the back, although it's a squeeze for adults. Luggage capacity is on a par with the three-door A1.

Market and Model

So, aside from the shiny bits, what else do you get for your money? Audi claims that the parts fitted to this car are worth £2,200 over and above the cost of an S Line but tack only £950 onto the price, which sounds like a reasonable deal. But are you really getting anything extra? Yes, there's the xenon headlights but otherwise you're buying a different design of wheels, roof and exterior trim elements and inside there isn't a great deal that differentiates this car materially from an S Line trim level that already delivers part-leather sports seats and a three-spoke S line sports steering wheel. It also includes powered windows and mirrors, a split/folding rear seat, air conditioning, a Concert CD audio system incorporating an SD card reader linked to a 6.5-inch retractable display screen, a Bluetooth mobile phone interface and a Driver's Information System. Safety is well accounted for, with two front airbags, side airbags and curtain head bags. Isofix child seat fixings, seatbelt tensioners and integral headrests. Prices start at just over £18,000 for the 1.2-litre three-door and top out at nearly £21,000 for the 1.4 -litre with the S-tronic twin-clutch gearbox.

Cost of Ownership

Residual values for the A1 remain just about the strongest in the supermini sector, propped up by Audi's formidable badge equity. Of course, it's more than just smoke and mirrors. In order for the A1 to enjoy this durability of appeal, you need proper substance in the areas of safety, security, reliability and economy and this little Audi scores well across the board. The three engines selected for the S Line Style Edition all score well for economy and emissions. The 1.2-litre engine is a real fuel miser, returning a combined fuel figure of 55.4mpg. Even around town you should still see over 45mpg unless you're prodding the turbochargers with regularity. Drive in a relaxed fashion and you might even match Audi's quoted carbon dioxide emissions figure of just 118g/km - excellent for a petrol-engined car of this size. Go for the 1.4 and you get 53.3mpg and 124g/km, while the diesel model predictably upstages those numbers with 74.3mpg and a cracking 99g/km.
