Ten Second Review

The latest Honda Jazz doesn't enjoy too many radical changes, instead opting for an evolutionary approach. The 1.4-litre engine is at its best when teamed with the continuously variable transmission which takes the effort out of city driving. Although it has gained a reputation as a favourite of more mature drivers, this Jazz makes a lot of sense for anyone who wants an easy life.

Background

I'm all for an easy life. If there's a labour-saving way of circumventing something that looks suspiciously like hard work, I'm interested. I suspect I'm not alone either. For a good proportion of the population, driving is a chore that needs to be managed carefully, the effort involved eased away. The Honda Jazz 1.4 ES automatic is about as qualified a contender as any for this task. This is a car that feels almost embarrassingly easy to operate. Climbing from, say, a Ford Focus into the Jazz is like walking from a GCSE maths class into primary school. At first you feel a bit of a fraud, as if you're punching way below your weight but then you come to ask yourself why driving needs to be so labour intensive. It probably hasn't escaped your attention that the Honda Jazz is a bit of a geriatric's darling. It's easy to see why, age indeed bringing wisdom. The 1.4 ES Auto would be the model I'd recommend, offering an even smoother and easier drive. Come to think of it, that's a recipe the lazy amongst us could well warm to.

Driving Experience

Normally, we'd be talking about the finer points of a car's handling here or what the engine sounds like or how quickly it gets to 60mph, but if you're interested in a Jazz 1.4 ES automatic, I should also guess that these matters are of distinctly peripheral concern. How does the engine sound? Distant. That's a good start. Likewise the steering scores points for low involvement. The gearchange is a fire and forget sort of deal. For those interested in the technicalities, it's a CVT (continuously variable transmission) rather than a typical torque-converter equipped automatic. This means that it's more efficient but also means that, on occasion, it holds onto gears when you think it should be changing. Trust the way the car goes down the road rather than the faint strainings of the engine and you'll realise the gearbox is merely selecting its most efficient ratio. Visibility out of the Jazz is excellent and this latest model improves ride quality and aims to reduce wind noise at speed via some aerodynamic refinements. The steering has been adjusted to offer a but more feel at motorway speeds.

Design and Build

The latest Jazz has been tweaked improved in a number of ways. The key styling changes are the sleeker front and rear bumpers. The bumper and air dam assemblies have been optimised to reduce drag as the airflow passes over the Jazz's body and to avoid turbulence when the air detaches from the rear. These styling improvements aid aerodynamic efficiency on all Jazz models helping the Cd figure to fall from 0.336 to 0.330. The projector headlights also give the latest Jazz a sharper look. There's additional chrome and the option of leather inside the Jazz which makes it feel a little more upmarket and the instruments have been updated with orange backlighting unique to the petrol powered variants, while the Hybrid version uses blue lighting to differentiate it. The dashboard materials have also been improved. Otherwise its much as before. Honda's 'Magic Seats' continue whereby the back seats can fold down in one fluid motion into the footwell with the headrests in place. Lift up the rear seat cushion against the rear seat back and there's a tall protected space in the rear seat footwells for items like plants. This model also gets rear seats which now recline 73mms to increase rear passenger comfort.

Market and Model

Priced at ?£14,495, the Jazz 1.4 ES auto compares reasonably well against the value propositions of its key rivals. A Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 Exclusiv Auto costs just a couple of hundred pounds less and never feels quite as versatile as the Honda, nor does it have the same fantastic all-round visibility and airiness in the cabin. The ES gets climate controlled air conditioning and electric rear windows over the entry-level S model. Other standard equipment includes a CD stereo with MP3 compatibility and speed-dependent volume control. Safety has been a major concern in the design process of the Jazz. The car features Honda's ACE body structure which works to help avoid crash situations where larger vehicles ride up over smaller ones. Standard safety equipment looks very generous with electronic stability control, dual front and side airbags plus full length curtain airbags fitted as standard

Cost of Ownership

It's usually the case that automatic models are considerably less fuel efficient than their manual counterparts, but remember that this features a continuously variable transmission (CVT) rather than a 'true' automatic so it's a lot more efficient. How efficient? It's actually easier on fuel than its manual counterpart. The combined fuel figure is 52.3mpg which just squeaks past the 51.4mpg of the manual car. Somewhat counterintuitively, the urban figures, when the car makes the most gearchanges, are identical. The gap widens on the extra urban measure, where a manual Jazz gets 58.9mpg and the CVT 'box extends that to 61.4mpg. It's a similar story with emissions, the manual car managing 113g/km with the Jazz auto driving that down to 109g/km. The Jazz has always done well in terms of residual values, largely because the mature ownership profile means that cars are usually serviced on the nose, driven sympathetically, cover low mileages and aren't destroyed by kids or borrowed by teenagers.

PCP

PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) a simple cost effective way to buy your new or nearly new car.
You choose the car, the deposit, how long you want the contract to run for and the mileage you intend to do. You will then receive a quote for fixed cost motoring for the length of the contract. At the end of the contract you have a choice to either buy the car outright for an agreed lump sum (the GFV or final balloon payment), or hand the vehicle back to the lender.

HP

Hire Purchase allows you to take ownership of a car once all payments are made.

This is one of the most popular methods to buy a new vehicle. You pay an initial deposit, then pay off the balance in monthly payments over an agreed period of time, when the payments are complete the car is yours.

One of the main benefits with Hire Purchase is the ability to buy a high value vehicle on monthly payments.
Hire Purchase allows you to tailor your finance package as deposit, length of time and monthly payments are all flexible.

Lease

Personal contract hire is very similar to normal contract hire, but is exclusively for private individuals. This is one of the most common form of leasing.
With a personal contract hire agreement you take control of a car for a contractual period – usually referred to as the ‘lease period’. You will make fixed monthly payments for the duration of the contract – when the contract expires you will simply return the car and take out a new personal contract hire lease. PCH means you never have to worry about resale values of your car.
