What is the EV Chargepoint Grant for Flat Owners and Renters?
This summer, the Government ended its plug-in car grant after succeeding in its goal of boosting electric car sales in the UK.
If you currently own and live in a flat, or rent a residential property, you may be eligible for a grant to help fund an electric chargepoint through the Government’s latest scheme.
The new guidance, provided by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), came into effect on 4th August 2022 and aims to help boost the appeal of EVs, by allowing many people to charge theirs at home.
The grant will cover up to 75% of the cost to buy and install a chargepoint socket – up to the value of £350 per grant.
Who can apply?
You can apply to receive this grant if:
- You own and live in a flat, or you rent a residential property
- Your flat or residential property has private off-street parking
- You own a qualifying vehicle
- You are moving to an eligible property which has an old chargepoint that you want to replace – however you must not have received the grant before, and you must meet all other eligibility criteria
Who can’t apply?
You are not able to apply for the grant if:
- You have already received the grant under the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme
- You are moving residence
- You want to move an existing chargepoint to a new location
- You live in a house that you own
For full eligibility criteria and to check whether you qualify for the grant, contact your chosen OZEV installer.
Does your property qualify?
Eligible properties must be in the UK – Channel Island and Isle of Man properties are not included.
OZEV will check your address, and your chargepoint installer will examine the parking space to assess whether an EV can be charged safely in that location.
You must have:
- A designated off-street parking space
- Access to the parking space at all times
- The sole legal right to the parking space
What vehicles qualify?
To be eligible for the grant, your vehicle must be on the OZEV list of approved vehicles.
You must be able to provide evidence that you are the registered keeper; have one on order; have leased one for at least six months, or have driven one as a work vehicle for at least six months.
It is hoped the EV Chargepoint Grant will help people who need to charge their EVs at home - further enhancing the convenience of electric vehicles in everyday life.
