Hibernian Set For Critical Spell

Hibernian face a critical spell in the race for a top six place in the Scottish Premiership after the Macklin Motors-backed side slipped to defeat against Rangers.

Hibs made the trip to Glasgow having edged ahead of Dundee in the standings but faced a stiff challenge against the erstwhile league leaders – who knew a win would move them back to the top of the table.

After a relatively quiet start, the game burst into life when Rangers were awarded a contentious spot-kick after 20 minutes for a foul by Nectarios Triantis, with David Marshall then denying James Tavernier.

Scott Wright drove home the rebound only for a VAR review to decide that he had stepped into the penalty box too soon – with the goal chalked off as a result.

Rangers did hit the front five minutes later however as Tavernier thumped a shot beyond Marshall although it looked like Hibs would go in level when Myziane Maolida netted for the seventh time this season to equalise.

However, Cyriel Dessers nodded Rangers back in front deep into injury time and despite the best efforts of the visitors, a third goal from Rabbi Matondo late on secured the points.

With just two games left to play before the mid-season split, Hibs sit a point behind Dundee in the table but have played a game more.

Next up for the Hibees is a home game with St Johnstone this weekend, with the visitors chasing points to try and avoid being sucked into the bottom two.
