What is Motability Scheme and how does it work?
As a leasing package, the Motability Scheme supports disabled drivers in getting about their daily lives. This also extends to their families and carers. By exchanging part or all of your mobility allowance, you can lease a brand-new vehicle of your choice. As it is a package, the Motability Scheme covers servicing, tax and insurance for complete peace of mind. Should you need any specific adaptations to your vehicle, the Scheme covers many of these too.
Who qualifies for Motability?
If you fulfil the following criteria, you could be eligible for the Scheme:
- Have a physical or cognitive disability which affects your mobility
- Receive a higher rate mobility allowance or Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
Which type of Motability vehicle suits me best?
Your Motability vehicle is there to assist with your exact circumstances. Which means each person’s preference of vehicle will be different. How much is mobility allowance per week?
The weekly mobility allowance is different depending on individual circumstances. Here are the basic payment types to get an idea:
- Higher rate Motability part of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) - £71
- Higher rate Motability part of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) - if you're claiming for a child under 16 - £71
- Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) - £71
- War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement - £79.25
How do I pay for Motability?
Your lease payments are made directly to the vehicle finance company from The Department of Work and Pensions. If you choose a car with an Advance Payment, you will need to cover this upfront. You can choose from bank transfer, debit or credit card methods.
How do I get my Motability vehicle?

Are Motability cars free?
No, Motability vehicles aren’t free. You exchange all or part of your mobility allowance to lease the car. However, if you need some extra help with your Motability car, new members to the Scheme can qualify for a New Vehicle Payment. This can help with the cost of your Advanced Payment should you need it.
What happens after three years with a Motability car?
After a three-year lease, your Motability agreement will end. When this happens, you simply hand the vehicle back to us. If you want to begin another lease you can then start another fresh leasing agreement with a new Motability vehicle.
How many miles can I drive?
This depends on the length of your lease. On a three-year lease you will have an allowance of 60,000 miles. On the five-year lease you’ll have 100,000 miles. You can exceed the mileage limits, but you will be charged 5p per mile.
How much do you get back when you hand your Motability car?
When returning the car at the end of your lease you could receive a Good Condition Payment (GCP), depending on the condition of your vehicle. This GCP bonus is up to £250 for a three-year lease or up to £350 for a five-year lease.
Can anyone use my Motability car?
Not anyone. You can insure up to three named drivers on your Motability vehicle. The best choices are usually close family members and/or carers. This is so if you’re unable to drive the car can be driven by them. Before being added to the car, criteria set out by Motability car insurance provider Direct Line Motability (DLM) must be met.
Can I buy my Motability car after three years?
As the Motability Scheme is a leasing scheme, there isn’t currently a way for you to buy your car after the lease has ended. But you can choose another new car and begin a new Motability Scheme lease for another three or five years.
What is PIP in Motability?
Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a benefit allowance. It is given to those with long-term illness or disability. A monthly payment is given, with the amount varying depending on your personal circumstances.
