How long is an MOT certificate usually valid for?

An MOT certificate is valid for one year from the date of your last MOT test.

What happens if my car fails its MOT test?

If your vehicle fails its MOT test, you will be given a document by your service advisor listing the reasons for the failure and advice on the next steps.

You must not drive your vehicle until any repairs are completed and a retest is conducted. If any 'minor' or 'advisory' problems are found, you can still take your vehicle away if your current MOT certificate is valid.

You can risk a fine of up to £2,500, a driving ban and 3 penalty points on your licence if you are found to be driving a vehicle that has a 'dangerous' problem identified during its MOT.

Do I need to pay for an MOT retest?

You may be charged for an MOT retest, depending on the circumstances.

If any repairs are completed at the test centre and a retest is carried out during 10 working days, you will only need a partial retest which you won't need to pay for.

You will however be charged a partial retest free if you take your vehicle away from the test centre for repairs and bring it back for a retest within 10 working days.

Can I book an MOT before my vehicle's due date?

You can book your vehicle's MOT one month (minus a day) before it's due and keep the renewal date listed on your current MOT certificate.

Is there a difference between an MOT and a service?

Yes, MOT tests and services are different - an MOT test is legally required by the Government on cars over three years old to make sure it is meeting road safety and environmental standards.

It's important to remember that an MOT test only guarantees the safety of your car on the day it is tested.

A service can provide a long-term safety guarantee by following recommended guidance set out by the vehicle's manufacturer.
