Heart of Midlothian made it six successive wins in the Scottish Premiership as the Macklin Motors-backed side strengthened its hold on third place in the table.

Motherwell arrived at Tynecastle looking to try and end the winning run, and came close to taking a first half lead when a lobbed effort from distance from Dan Casey had to be tipped over the bar by Zander Clark.

After a relatively quiet first half, Hearts eventually hit the front after the break and there was no surprise that it was talisman Lawrence Shankland who got the opening goal – meeting a free kick from Alan Forrest and guiding a fine header beyond the dive of ‘keeper Liam Kelly for his 25th goal of the season.

Hearts had chance to extend the lead but it would take until stoppage time for the Jam Tarts to add the second goal and wrap up the point.

Nathaniel Atkinson cut in from the right-hand side and attempted a shot with the outside of his boot that flicked into the air off a defender before falling to Kenneth Vargas, who turned before smashing the ball into the far corner of the net.

The three points moved Hearts 14 points clear of Kilmarnock after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Celtic – who sit eleven points ahead of Hearts in second spot.

Next up is a huge match against league leaders Rangers, who themselves have won the last seven league games on the bounce, at Ibrox this weekend.
