Hearts remain eleven points clear in third in the Scottish Premiership after battling to a hard-fought victory at St Mirren.

The Macklin Motors-backed side were forced to contend with the absence of Lawrence Shankland through illness as well as swirling winds which would have an impact on how the game panned out.

St Mirren almost took the lead in the first half when the wind got hold of a corner from Caolan Boyd-Munce and almost took it beyond Zander Clark and into the net.

However, it was Hearts who grabbed the lead just after the half hour mark, when a shot from Kenneth Vargas struck the arm of Marcus Fraser to give the visitors a penalty kick, which Jorge Grant converted in Shankland’s absence.

The second goal arrived just after the hour mark when Mikael Mandron put through his own goal, and although a fine effort from Toyosi Olusanya allowed the home side back into the game, there was to be no equaliser.

That was despite St Mirren having calls for penalty of their own when Conor McMenamin when down in the box, with the decision taken not to award a spot kick after the referee checked the VAR monitor pitchside.

Hearts round off phase one of the season this weekend at home to Livingston.
