Hearts retained a hold on third place in the Scottish Premiership standings after picking up a point from the first game after the international break.

The Macklin Motors-backed side had suffered a rare defeat in the final game before the break having gone down 2-1 at Ross County, but welcomed Kilmarnock to Tynecastle having been boosted by the signing of Kenneth Vargas on a permanent deal.

Vargas had joined on loan from Herediano and made a positive impact on the pitch with seven goals, leading to the Edinburgh side taking up an option to sign the Costa Rican on a five-year deal.

He celebrated his permanent deal with the opening goal against the side giving chase in the standings, taking advantage of a delicate chip to the back post from Lawrence Shankland to head in from close range and open the scoring.

The visitors created chances to equalise before the break, the best of which saw Zander Clark pull off an astonishing save from close range to deny Marley Watkins when he should have scored.

Watkins would make up for that in the second half however, as he curled in a shot from the left hand side of the box that left Clark with no chance as it nestled in the corner.

A point apiece means Hearts remain eleven points clear of their rivals in the race for third place ahead of the trip to St Mirren this weekend.
