Hibernian Slide Out After Fiesty Tie

Hibernian’s hopes of success in the Scottish Cup are at an end for another year after the Macklin Motors-backed side exited the competition at the quarter-final stage.

The Edinburgh outfit went up against Rangers having enjoyed an upturn in fortunes in the league, and were almost gifted an early goal after dithering at the back by visiting ‘keeper Jack Butland.

Dwelling on a back pass, Butland came under pressure from Myziane Maolida who managed to steal the ball with a tackle that resulted in him hitting the post and almost putting the home side ahead.

Rangers had missed a chance to score themselves before being handed a penalty when Dujon Sterling was felled in the box, only for David Marshall to keep out the spot kick from James Tavernier.

However, John Lundstram was quickest to the rebound to bundle in the opening goal and put the league leaders ahead.

Rangers held the lead through to half-time, which only arrived following a lengthy delay as a result of an injury to Martin Boyle that resulted in him being taken to hospital for checks before later being released having been diagnosed with concussion.

Already on the back foot, Hibs were reduced to ten men when Jordan Obita was sent off for two yellow cards before Nathan Moriah-Welsh was also dismissed just three minutes later for a late challenge on goalscorer Lundstram.

The nine men were able to hold on until the final ten minutes when Fabio Silva fired in the second goal, leaving Hibernian to now focus on the Premiership and the battle for a top six finish.

That continues with a trip to Ross County, a matter of weeks after a 2-0 home victory against the same opposition.
