New Online Security Measures to Be Aware Of
A number of new anti-fraud measures have come into effect as of 14th March 2022, to help protect customers shopping online.
Individuals can expect to see more identification checks whilst transacting – this will come in the form of a new Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) requirement. This is essentially a Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) measure, which will already be familiar to individuals who have used online banking.
The SCA will require customers to provide an extra level of verification, which could include, something they are (for example, facial recognition), something they know (for example, a password), or something they have (for example, a code sent to their mobile phone). Not every online transaction will involve this additional security measure; low value and repeat purchases may be exempt, however high value items will require this new Two-Factor Authentication.
The rules, which have been brought in by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), were supposed to come into operation a year ago but were delayed to give retailers more time to accustom. The legislation came out of the European Banking Authority and made UK law before Brexit.
