Who let the dogs out?

According to the PDSA, 27% of you own a dog - that's over 10 million pet dogs living in our nation's homes.

Individuals welcoming four-legged family members into their homes has had a recent surge. So, it seems that many of you will now have someone new to think about when purchasing your next car!

What do I need to consider when looking for a dog-friendly car?

The size and needs of your dog will heavily influence your needs in a vehicle.

CarGurus recently completed a survey on the top features you should consider when buying a dog-friendly vehicle. These are:

  • Comfort

Interior space is key. Is there plenty of room for your dog to sit up, lie down and stretch out - without taking up passenger space?

  • Access

A low base on your boot makes life easier for your dog. But consider having a ramp available to hand to assist your dog with getting in and out.

  • Materials

Easy-to-clean surfaces and durable materials are a wise choice. Accessories like boot liners and mats can also help protect your interior.

  • Test it out

Ensure the car is right for both you and your canine companion - with a test drive. Let a member of your local sales team know and we will organise this.

What car accessories will be useful for my dog?

There are so many great accessories out there, it can be tricky to know what to go for. We've picked out our favourites for you here:

  • Dog seat belt/harness

An adjustable seat belt or harness will make sure your dog is safely secured in your car - and of less distraction to you while driving.

  • Dog headrest guard

Strong mesh or tubing design guards help to keep your dog safely in the boot area, preventing distraction to the driver.

  • Dog hammock/seat cover

Sadly not a beach side accessory - a dog hammock is a waterproof protective cover to protect your seats and to secure your dog.

  • Collapsible dog travel bowl

Make sure your dog is well hydrated and fed on your journey with a portable and compact container for on-the-move snacks and drinks.

  • Dog travel crate

For smaller dogs, a soft and secure travel crate can be the best option - they are easy options for transportation and storage.

  • Back seat dog bed

Offering anchor points for security, these aren't your average dog beds. Treat your pooch to a safe, comfortable ride.

  • Dog car ramp/stairs

A ramp can be a convenient accessory to assist your dog to get in and out of your car and is easily folded away for storage.
