Motability has recently announced a change in its lease extension process for customers. Effective from 4th April 2024, the period for automatic lease extension has been shortened from two years to six months.

Read on to learn more about lease extensions, and what this could mean for you.

What is a lease extension?

An automatic lease extension is the continuation of a Motability agreement beyond its original term.

This is triggered if the leaseholder hasn't selected a new vehicle or made other arrangements by the end of the lease.

The extension enables individuals to keep using their vehicle without losing cover.

During the extension, you can search for your next vehicle and order it at any timeYou don’t have to wait until thextension period ends.

Why has the automatic lease extension changed?

The automatic extension has been reduced to six months due to improvements in new car supply chains. Essentially, customers don’t have to wait as long to access new vehicles.

Customers whose current lease ends on or after April 4th 2024, will automatically receive a six-month extension.

Motability may allow two-year lease extensions in certain individual circumstances. Customers must request this via their online account or by contacting Motability on 0300 456 4566.

If you are already on a two-year extension, this will not change. You can continue until the end of the two-year period.

Will I need an MOT if I extend my lease?

Yes, you will need to get an MOT within the last three months of your current lease, even if you plan on extending. The cost of your MOT is included in your inclusive Motability package.

We recommend booking your MOT at least a month before it is due to allow time for any issues to be addressed, if applicable.

How can I request a lease extension?

If your lease is ending soon and you wish to extend it, the easiest way to check your options is in the 'Current lease' section of your online account. However, if your lease has ended and you haven’t arranged a new vehicle, it will automatically extend.
